A Message from the Chairman

Welcome to the Woodbridge Chess Club web site. We were formed in 1977 and since then have competed in the London Chess League. We are presently in the second division.

The club should not be confused with the Suffolk town of the same name. The name derives from an amalgamation of Woodford and Redbridge, where many players lived at the time of our formation. Having no home venue we are not strictly geographically based, but many of our players have their roots in the East London / South-West Essex area.

We are not just about playing chess, but have a social side as well. It is rare for a Woodbridge player to finish his game and go home before enjoying at least one or two post-match refreshments! Numerous international visits have been made, including Ireland, Wales, Scotland, France, Germany, Poland and several times to our good friends in Ieper (Ypres) in Belgium.

Every five years a special anniversary event is held. We are now looking forward to celebrating our 35th year. Plans for this event began as soon as the participants had recovered from our 30th anniversary! Team spirit is particularly strong at Woodbridge. We are rarely short of players. We are particularly proud that in over 300 matches played we have conceded a mere 7 defaults.

I hope you enjoy our web site.
